Top 5 Must-Haves for Your Hospital Room After Birth
From a Newborn Photographer & Mom of Four
Hi, I’m Danielle Ashley newborn photographer, mom of four, and someone who’s been through the whirlwind of birth more than once. I’ve experienced both a cesarean and three VBACs, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned through it all, it’s how important comfort and ease are in those first precious days with your newborn.
With my last two births, I was out of the hospital within 24 hours. Why? Because nothing compares to the comfort of your own home when you’re bonding with your baby. But during that short hospital stay, a few essentials made all the difference in helping me rest, recover, and soak in those sweet first moments.
Here are my Top 5 Must-Haves for the Hospital Room to help make your stay smoother and more comfortable:
Whether you’re nursing or just snuggling, a breastfeeding pillow is a lifesaver. It gives your arms and back a break when you’re completely exhausted, and it makes breastfeeding so much easier when you’re adjusting to those first feeds. I’ve also used mine as a neck pillow while baby napped on my chest—because let’s be real, those little moments are everything.
You’re going to be taking so many photos of your sweet new baby—trust me. Between the pictures, video calls, and updates to friends and family, your phone battery won’t last long. Bring a long charging cord or portable charger so you’re never left without power when those perfect little yawns or tiny stretches happen.
Hospital food doesn’t always cut it—especially when you’re running on no sleep and your body is recovering from birth. I always pack protein bars, trail mix, or anything easy to grab and eat one-handed. Snacks help keep your energy up and support healing, especially in those first few hours after delivery.
Hydration is so important postpartum, especially if you’re breastfeeding. While the hospital does provide a cup, I’ve fallen in love with my BrüMate postpartum. I got it after my last birth, and it’s become my go-to. It’s spill-proof (a huge bonus when you’re half-asleep) and keeps water cold for hours.
After birth, all you want is comfort. Pack a cozy outfit that’s soft, stretchy, and easy to nurse in if you’re breastfeeding. Whether you’ve had a c-section or vaginal birth, your body deserves to feel as relaxed as possible. Think loose-fitting joggers, a nursing-friendly top, and maybe even a cozy cardigan if it’s chilly. And don’t forget a comfy going-home outfit for baby too. Something soft, easy to put on, and weather-appropriate. A simple zip-up onesie and a hat are perfect for that first trip home together.
Every mama’s journey is different, but these little things helped make my hospital stays calmer, more comfortable, and full of peaceful moments with my newborns. If you’re preparing for birth, pack with the intention of nurturing yourself, not just your baby. You deserve it.
Wishing you a peaceful delivery and beautiful memories in those first magical days.
